The Golden State Warriors are reportedly unwilling to pay the steep price necessary to acquire Anthony Davis in a blockbuster deal that could have also reunited him with LeBron James.
According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the Washington Wizards were seeking multiple unprotected first-round picks along with draft-pick swaps from Golden State in any trade involving Davis. The Warriors ultimately balked at that asking price, causing negotiations centered around a potential Davis-LeBron package to come to a halt.
Golden State’s reluctance underscores the franchise’s desire to remain competitive while preserving its long-term flexibility. Although pairing Stephen Curry with both LeBron James and Anthony Davis would have created one of the most star-studded trios in league history, surrendering multiple unprotected first-round selections and swaps would have significantly limited the Warriors’ ability to build for the future.
The reported asking price also highlights how highly Washington values Davis despite the uncertainty surrounding his long-term future. Unprotected first-round picks are among the NBA’s most valuable trade assets, particularly for veteran stars.
While Charania noted that discussions are currently dead, the NBA offseason has shown time and again that trade talks can quickly be revived if circumstances change. As training camp approaches, Golden State appears content to avoid an all-in gamble that could mortgage its future, even for the opportunity to unite Curry, James, and Davis.
For now, one of the summer’s most intriguing blockbuster scenarios remains just that—a hypothetical scenario.
